Guyana’s PPP Government should initiate investigation to clear Jagdeo’s name, VP Bharrat Jagdeo should step down during investigation

The VICE News video about Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has gone viral all over the world. The video is entitled ‘Guyana for Sale’ and has been broadcast on the Showtime channel, an American premium television network which, in September 2018, was available to approximately 28.567 million U.S. households.

The video captures Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo reportedly being offered inducements by Chinese companies to gain lucrative public sector projects in oil-rich Guyana. This video could negatively influence the country’s image abroad given the wide reach of the Showtime channel.

To clear the name of its Vice President, the PPP Government should initiate an independent, foreign investigation into the corruption allegations. During this investigation, Jagdeo should step down so as not to be perceived as having any influence in the process. Jagdeo must be given a fair trial according to the principle of open justice — ‘that justice should not only be done, but should manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done’. This is a central feature of the administration of justice under the common law.

Jagdeo held two press conferences to reject the bribery claims. Jagdeo has since been quoted as saying “I am going to take legal action against him because he is damaging my reputation”.

Jagdeo also said Su Zhi Rong will be evicted from the property that he rented from him.
