LIVE Conversations with Elders on Indian-Trinidadian, Bhadase Sagan Maraj (1920 – 1971) – Part 11 INVITATION TO OUR 161st ICC ZOOM PUBLIC MEETING

Bhadase Sagan Maraj (1920 – 1971), an Indian-Trinidadian in the Caribbean, was a politician, religious leader, civil rights activist, trade unionist, landowner, businessman, philanthropist, wrestler and newspaper publisher. He dedicated himself to advocating for the rights and welfare of the Indo-Trinidadian community. He founded the Caroni East Indian Association, the People's Democratic Party, the Democratic Labour Party, the Democratic Liberation Party, the All-Trinidad Sugar Estates and Factory Workers' Trade Union in 1952, and the Bomb newspaper. Maraj's leadership skills and charismatic personality made him a prominent political figure, leading the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) to become the largest and most influential Hindu organization in the Caribbean dedicated to preserving and promoting Indian culture and traditions. His commitment to education led to the establishment of several schools and the construction of the now prestigious Lakshmi Girls' Hindu College. Bhadase Sagan Maraj's commitment to social justice, religious preservation and educational empowerment continues to shape the lives of countless individuals and stands as a testament to his enduring legacies in Trinidad and Tobago.

Columnist George Alleyne ( Newsday 13/02/13) wrote, “Had the British Colonial Office…. not postponed the general election scheduled for 1955, in a bid to block the Bhadase Sagan Maraj (PDP) from winning the election, there is the possibility that Maraj would have been Trinidad and Tobago’s first Chief Minister and Premier as well as Prime Minister.” In the federal elections of 1958, the DLP led by Maraj won 6 of the 10 Trinidad seats in the West Indies Federation, a historic first defeat of the ruling PNM led by Dr. Eric Williams.
