Mixed-Race “Dougla” Identity in the Indian Diaspora: Creolisation, Indianisation or Both? Invitation THIS SUNDAY to the 132nd weekly ICC (+AGI) ZOOM Public Meeting.
Despite rivalries and tensions between Indians and Africans in the Caribbean and elsewhere, the number of interracial unions and “douglas” (the children of such unions) continues to be increase. “Dougla” identity fuses, confuses, undermines and upsets racial classifications and boundaries in its persistent hybridity.
What is the attitude of this mixed-race group to the two major competing groups in Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname? What is the attitude of these two groups towards “douglas”? Is being a “dougla” a disadvantage or a privilege? Do “douglas” feel that they are more national in these postcolonial times? What cultural traditions and ideologies do “douglas” follow? With whom do they socialise? How do they align culturally? Who are their heroes? Who do they marry? How do they vote in the race-based party politics of these societies? These are some of the questions to be addressed in this ZOOM Public Meeting?
Please join us THIS SUNDAY for the 132nd weekly ICC (+AGI) ZOOM Public Meeting, December 11, 2022 at (1.00 p.m. Belize), (2.00 p.m. New York/Eastern time), (3.00 p.m. Trinidad/Atlantic time), (3.00 p.m. Guyana), (4.00 p.m. Suriname), (7.00 p.m. England), (9.00 p.m. South Africa), (Sun 12 midnight, India, ND), (Mon 7.00 a.m. Fiji).
