Professor Vijay Naraynsingh of Trinidad awarded honorary fellowship in India
Professor Dr. Vijay Naraynsingh of Trinidad and Tobago was recently awarded an honorary fellowship by the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) at their 81st Annual Conference.
He is a Professor Emeritus of Surgery in the Department of Clinical Surgical Science, UWI, St Augustine Campus.
Upon the conferral of the award, Dr Naraynsingh said to the ACI: “I am deeply humbled by this honour, not only because it comes from your esteemed association, the second largest in the world, but also because I am a great, great grandson of an indentured labourer who had left Bharat 152 years ago. He and all the indentured pitris [ancestors] will be honoured by this award. It is also the first time that a surgeon from the West Indies has been honoured by you. I look forward to an even brighter future relationship with the ASI. Thank you most sincerely.”
Dr Narineshingh is a holder of Bachelors in Science in Anatomy (1971), and pursued his medical studies in United Kingdom. He obtained his surgical fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 1978, and has continued to add awards and fellowships throughout his career.
Dr Naraynsingh won the Chaconia Medal gold in 1991, Trinidad’s second highest award. Among his most recent award is Cariscience for the most outstanding Caribbean researcher in 2015, and the UWI research award in 2012.
The focus of Dr Naraynsingh’s research has been in the field of vascular surgery. He established vascular surgery as an independent specialty in the West Indies and also established a renal transplant unit in Trinidad. As a surgeon, he has completed over four decades of general, plastic vascular, pediatric surgery and urology.
He was the senior examiner of surgery at UWI between 2006 and 2015. Between 2007 and 2015, he served as the President of Caribbean College of Surgeons. To his credit, he has three chapters of in textbooks, 326 published articles, over 160 abstracts and 160 podium presentations. He became the second West Indian to be granted an honorary fellowship by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr Naraynsingh has been a member of ACI since 1983.
