India Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention in Indore, Madhya Pradesh earlier today (Jan 9). The PM remarked that the Pravasi Bhartiyas have an important role to play in addressing the world’s desire to know more about India . He said that the world was watching India keenly with great curiosity and highlighted the extraordinary achievements of the nation in recent years. PVD is a celebratory day observed annually on January 9th by India to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on January 9th 1915.
Guyana President Irfaan Ali and Surinam President Chandrikapersad Santokhi were the chief guest and special guest of honour respectively at India’s flagship diaspora conclave, which was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi today (Jan 9), PM Modi formally inaugurated the convention. Ausaf Sayeed, secretary (overseas Indian affairs) in the external affairs ministry, told a media briefing on Thursday. “We have received an enthusiastic response from the diaspora, with more than 3,500 registrations from nearly 70 countries,” he said. The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of Guyana and Surinam, and Sayeed said the focus is expected to be on energy, agriculture, ICT, migration and mobility, infrastructure and food processing.
